The Funny Thing

about

Wanaka-based singer/songwriter Anna van Riel is proud to announce the release of her new single The Funny Thing, an exciting collaboration with Aaron Tokona (of Ahoribuzz and Cairo Knife Fight fame, among other impressive accolades). van Riel, who already has two albums and an EP to her name, is releasing the single fresh off the back of a national album release tour with guitarist Robert Glen.
Never one to remain idle, Anna – who is due to give birth at the beginning of May – has been working tirelessly behind the scenes to collaborate with Tokona to release The Funny Thing before her new arrival. Of the single, Anna says “The Funny Thing is based on a true story that just kind of birthed itself into a song.”
Written and composed by van Riel, the song’s storyline speaks for itself. Having once found herself in an awkward love hexagon Anna has aptly put her situation into music and words. Tokona adds; "The funny thing about the truth is it is true, and when we face the things we don't wanna see we’ll be free, which is the funny thing I love about this song"
The collaboration process with this member of New Zealand Music Royalty was an experience she will not forget quickly. “Working with Aaron on the track was amazing. His natural and intuitive approach made working with him a wonderful experience.”
The single is due to be released mid-year, but those who are not shy to her antics on social media will know that this is just a teaser: Anna has been busy in the recording studio with fellow Wanaka musician Civilian Sol, and fans can expect another EP to be released later in the year.
Next on the agenda however, Anna will be taking a few months off to welcome her new arrival.

lyrics

The Funny Thing - Anna van Riel

Vs1
You know what’s the funny thing? On my thumb I wear your ring
And it’s two sizes too big for me
And the irony is that where I’m running to, to get myself away from you
Is to a town where I got five other lovers that I’m also tryin’ a get away from.

Ch
And you, you press my hand upon your heart
And you, you say we should never part
And you say, you say wear this funny oversized ring
But here’s the funny thing. Here’s the funny thing.

Oh the irony is that where I’m running to, to get myself away from you
Is to a town where I got five other lovers that I’m also tryin’ a get away from.

Br x2
No, it’s not my intention to take you for a ride
You don’t need to run and hide
But it seems to you I just went and dropped the A-bomb

Ch

Oh the irony is that where I’m running to, to get myself away from you
Is to a town where I got five other lovers that I’m also tryin’ a get away from.
